History
The vineyard was planted in 2006 with cold hardy grape varieties: Marquette a red grape then just released by the University of Minnesota, and Louise Swenson a white grape developed several years ago, also in Minnesota. In 2007 we planted additional Marquette, a small amount of St Croix, also a red variety, and the white variety La Crescent.
Vineyard Specifics
Our Shelburne Road Vineyard slopes slightly to the west and receives maximum sunlight with north-south row orientation. This also allows the dominant N-S winds to sweep through and keep the vines dry after rains.
Sandy and stony loams of the Stockbridge, Nellis and Hinesburg series dominate the soils of our Shelburne Road Vineyard. The Stockbridge and Nellis soils are deep, excessively drained loams formed in glacial till derived from limestone, calcareous shale, schist, phyllite, and quartzite. Their high natural fertility balances the nutrient leaching that occurs in sandy soils. The Hinesburg series is similar in composition and drainage, but somewhat lower in natural fertility.
